Set a time for each task

The first step to have a good morning routine is to set a time for each of the actions that will conform this routine. This means that you shouldn't just give yourself one hour or two for your routine, but you should set a specific number of minutes for each task.

Write down all of the things you're going to do for your morning routine and add a specific number of minutes for each task (shower-5 minutes, breakfast- minutes, hair and makeup -20 minutes...). If you add up the minutes from every task, you will know how long before leaving home you need to wake up. Not only that, but if you keep to your schedule, you will never be late to work!

Leave things done the night before

The best way to avoid morning stress and extra work is to leave things done for tomorrow so you can save up time in the morning.

  • Make your Tupperware lunch while you are making dinner.
  • Choose the clothes you are going to wear and leave them on the bedside table or a chair so you only have to slip them on in the morning.
  • Shower at night instead of in the morning. Unless you have oily skin, exercise before work or find it hard to get your energy in the morning, shower before bed. This will also make you relax further and have a better rest. For more information on the subject, take a look at our article: Is it better to shower at night or morning?
  • If you have any special tasks that need doing in the morning that are not usually on your schedule (go to the post office, call the plumber...), make sure you put up a post-it before going to bed so you don't forget about it.

Give yourself plenty of time to have a big breakfast

You should already know by now, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so start acting like it is.

Give yourself a proper breakfast full of protein, carbohydrates and vitamins so you have all the energy and mental abilities you need during the day.

Fresh juice will give your fiber and vitamins, whilst wholegrain oatmeal with coconut milk will give you the energy boost you need. If you have enough time, why not scramble an egg too?

Beauty routine

As we've said, if you don't have much time in the morning you can shower at night, though if you live in a humid climate, it's better to do so in the morning.

Make sure you moisturize your skin and face properly, clean your teeth and floss for the perfect freshness sensation. It's best to clean your teeth after breakfast to get rid of the germs, though it's better to wait for 30 minutes before brushing them if you've had citrus fruits for breakfast so you don't damage your enamel.

When it comes to makeup, keep it natural and simple, you don't need to do yourself up too much to go to work. Apply some powder foundation, cover your eye bags if need be and dab some nude eye-shadow, mascara and natural-looking lipstick and you're ready to go. Take a look at how to do natural makeup for more information.

Brush your hair thoroughly and forget about ironing or curling, it will only waste your time and damage your hair. Instead, play with the natural texture of your hair to create beautiful up-dos if you feel you're having a bad hair day.

Time to think

They say that your brain is at its most active in the morning, this is why you should give yourself a few minutes to clear your head in order to concentrate better. Leave your mind blank or meditate for a minute or two to activate your brain.

Take advantage of commuting to run through your daily schedule or give yourself some free time and read while travelling, buy the daily newspaper or read that article you've been wanting to get your hands on for a while. Make sure you give yourself a bit of "pleasure time" before you start working so you start the day in a better mood.

Exercise in the morning?

There are many benefits of exercise in the morning, so if you want to activate your system efficiently, wake up an hour early and start an exercise routine. However, if you cannot fit in a full workout before leaving home, try to at least fit in a couple of push ups or sit ups.

Another way to activate your body in the morning is to choose to walk or cycle to work, this will give you the extra boost if you don't have the time to fit in a workout in your daily routine.

The importance of a good night's sleep

The key to make your morning routine work and start the day in the best way possible is to sleep well, in fact.

Make sure you always go to bed at the same time to get your body used to a schedule, this is useful so you don't feel tired in the morning. To look your best when you wake up, make sure you always sleep for 8 hours straight.

Keeping to a routine

It may seem difficult for some people to stick to a daily schedule for several reasons, but getting into a routine will benefit your health and energy levels. This is why there are several tips you should take into account:

  • If you find it hard to keep up with the times you've set for yourself, put an alarm clock for each of the tasks you are planning to do in your daily routine (wake up 7:30, shower 7:35, make breakfast 7:50, etc... ). You will eventually get used to spending a certain amount of time doing a certain activity and will simply get into the habit without needing alarm clocks.
  • Tell yourself that keeping a routine is good for you. In fact, many successful people have strict morning routines that help organize their lives and perform better at their jobs. If you need to, create a picture or a board with motivational quotes that will inspire you first thing in the morning.
  • Make sure your alarm clock is not too loud or makes a horrible noise, as this will only make you wake up in a bad mood.
  • Do not go back to sleep once the alarm has gone off. This will only be worse, both for your schedule and your health.
