UGC is the abbreviated form of University Grant Commission. It is a statutory body in India and was set up in 1956 by the Indian Union Government. Professor Ved Prakash is the incumbent Chairman of UGC, India. Headquarter of UGC is located at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg in New Delhi. UGC has decentralized its operation by setting up six regional centers in Bhopal, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, and Guwahati.

History of UGC
In 1946, the UGC was created to oversee the work of three central universities located in Banaras, Aligarh, and Delhi. The following year, in 1947, the committee of UGC was entrusted to deal responsibly with all the universities that existed at that time. After India gained its independence, under the chairmanship of S. Radhakrishnan, the University Education Commission was set up in the year 1948.
On 28 December 1953, UGC was officially opened by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, who was at that time the Minister of Education, Natural Resource, and Scientific Research of India. In November 1956, UGC was established as a statutory body of the Government of India by the Indian Parliament. This establishment marked a significant step in standardizing the higher education system across the country, providing a unified framework for university governance and funding.
Operations of UGC
UGC is charged with the determination, coordination, and maintenance of standards of higher education. It provides recognition to universities in India. The funds of the universities and colleges which are recognized by UGC are disbursed by UGC.
Additionally, UGC plays a crucial role in setting educational policies and ensuring their implementation across the various institutions. It promotes and coordinates university education and formulates regulations on minimum standards of education. If you are looking for a specific university or college, then at first refer to the official website of the particular university or college and check whether the letter of approval by UGC is present on the website or not.
If the letter of approval is present, then the university or college is UGC approved. If you can’t find the letter of approval, then refer to the official website of the University Grant Commission (UGC). Then check whether the particular college or university is recognized by it or not.
If you want a list of all the colleges and universities that are affiliated with UGC, then go to the website www.ugc.ac.in and then check the Universities tab for a list of Universities recognized by UGC.
