It is hard to trust packaging these days as almost everything claims to be good for the environment. Read the Labels

Make sure that when you look at the labels on every product you buy, you know exactly what you are looking for. Ignore vague and unspecific claims - for example make sure that the label says a little bit more than "all-natural". A lot of companies will use those words to try and attract your attention, but what you should really focus on is the ingredients.

Compare different versions of similar products and check some of the extra ingredients that they have added. Generally speaking, the fewer ingredients the better. If it simply says "all-natural", chances are, it's not. There should be other words on the label to allow the customer to have more of an idea of what is in the product.

Learn about marketing phrases and legal certifications

The world of eco-friendly products has a language all of its own, so make sure that you learn how to speak this foreign language. While there are reputable, accredited certifications such as fairtrade, organic certified, rainforest alliance, many marketers will use deliberately misleading terms to convince you that a product is eco-friendly.

Be sure to establish exactly what a company means when they label their products as "all-natural", "organic", and "non-toxic" - if you have doubts or questions about a product then contact the manufacturer and ask them directly. These companies know that most shoppers do not really think about these words or what they mean and they use this to their advantage to see just what people will buy. Forewarned is forearmed, so be prepared and get informed.

These companies are easy to find by doing a very simple Internet search. Their websites will tell you all of the products that they have and what they do to make them. This will truly help to put your mind at ease when you are at the grocery store.

Packaging is Everything

Be sure to look at the packaging of the items that you buy as well. Excessive packaging is good indication that the environment is not the highest priority for the manufacturer of a particular product. Most products these days do come in recyclable containers. This is a great way for you to do your part and buy these items. In addition, you can buy recycled paper and other recycled products as well as buying secondhand items when possible. Not only will you save money, you will be helping to keep our environment and landfills clean of extra waste. You can even recycle waste materials yourself or re-purpose old items if you are feeling creative.
