How To Pray The Rosary For A Deceased Person

Catholics pray the Rosary for many reasons, including the eternal rest of souls. Although it is possible to pray for a deceased persons' soul at any time with a rosary it is more common to see rosary prayers recited in the vigil that precedes the funeral.

You'll need:
Steps to follow:

Recite the Rosary as you normally would with one small exception (as explained in step 3). Make the sign of the cross, and begin the rosary with the Apostles' Creed, reciting the Our Father three times and a Gloria.

Pray the rosary while remembering the glorious mysteries:

  • Jesus' resurrection
  • the ascension of Jesus
  • The coming of the Holy Spirit
  • Mary's assumption into heaven
  • Her coronation as queen of heaven

If prayer is in a group, announce each mystery before reciting each decade of ten beads. Then start praying the Our Father (in large beads) and ten Hail Mary prayers with small beads. Large beads also require a 'Gloria' before the mystery of the day is announced or prayed.

Include a special prayer for the dead as you move through the beads. After the 'Gloria' at the end of a decade, pray the prayer of Eternal Rest 'grant him / her eternal rest, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine, rest in peace, Amen...'
