How To Teach Your Child To Write Their Name

Children learn through repetition as they imitate their elders. If they see you writing, it's likely that they will soon ask you to teach them how to write too. You have to begin with small tasks like writing your name. This is the first step towards child literacy. OneHowTo are here to help with his article on how to teach your child to write their name. It will be a pleasurable experience for both of you!

You'll need:
  • Pencil
  • Lined notebook
  • Highlighters
  • Rubber
  • Bottle caps
  • Wooden letters
Steps to follow:
1

The first step to teach a child to write their name is to choose a workplace where there are no distractions for the child. It should be a well-lit room where there is a large table and two comfortable chairs. Chances are that you will spend some time sitting down until the child learns to write his or her name correctly.

2

Purchase a lined notebook. In the notebook, you will keep all the child's examples and it's where he or she can practice until they can spell their name correctly.

3

Before starting, explain to your child what you are going to do. Tell them that you will teach them to write their name, just like grown-ups do. Your child will be delighted at this prospect, because children tend to imitate adults.

4

First write your child's name for them. Write their name using large and clear letters, similar to the sort of calligraphy was once taught in school. This will help them get used to how the spelling of their name looks like. Before letting them try with a pencil, explain to your child how to follow the lines to write their name.

5

If your child is still very small, you can first start with wooden letters or bottle caps with the letters of their name written on them. The kids will have to put them in order like a puzzle. This way they will learn how their name looks like before they are confident enough to grab a pencil.

6

Once they know the order of the letters, you can help them to write their name using little dots which the child can join together to form a complete letter. Instead of using little dots, you can also write their name using highlighters. Kids love bright colours and they will feel more attracted and interested. You can first start with highlighters and then move on to little dots.

7

When they improve, you don't need to use the dots.Ask your child to copy the letters in the notebook, but this time without the helping dots.

8

Check each time they write down their name and reward each effort with a treat. The rest is just a matter of patience.
