You will surely be wondering how to write a cover letter when the time comes for you to apply for an interesting job. The purpose of the cover letter is to convince the recipient that they have something to gain from hiring you, and how your training and experience will contribute to the needs of the company. If you respond to an advertisement, highlight relevant elements about yourself that relate to it. But if you approach a company of your own accord, focus on things related to the industry you want to join. Here are some tips for getting an interview.

Elaborate on the most important points mentioned in your resume, but keep it under one page and positively refer to all your previous experiences. Your cover letter will provide more information for the recipient and make them want to talk to you.


Research the company beforehand, including the name of the head of the company where you want to work. In addition to adding a more personalised touch, addressing the cover letter to a specific person will show that you did your research. If you don't find a specific recipient, address the letter to: "To whom it may concern".

If, instead of sending it by post, you're writing an email cover letter, greet the recipient directly on the body of the email. In this case you don't need to write your personal information at the top left.

Write the letter in the first or third person, but avoid switching from one to the other. Pay attention to the conjugation of verbs, adjectives and possessive pronouns. Using the third person will give you greater distance and sound more ceremonial, while the first person makes you sound closer to the recipient. The request begins after the header. If you're using the third person, start with expressions such as "The undersigned" or simply with your name.


Dedicate one paragraph to each aspect you want to talk about; this division will give the letter visual clarity.

On the first paragraph you should shortly introduce yourself and mention the job you're applying to. This should be around one or two sentences long.


In the body of the letter you should answer the following questions:

  • Why are you the best candidate for this position?
  • What work experience do you have that could be helpful for the company?
  • What things can you bring to the company? Here you can emphasize what your career goals are and how can you develop them in the company.
  • Why are you interested in the role?

A sample division could be this one:

Paragraph 1: Introduce yourself and the job you're applying for.

Paragraph 2: Why you're the best candidate for this position. Here you can describe your academic and professional background.

Paragraph 3: What you can bring to the company.

Paragraph 4: Explain why you're interested in the role and repeat why you would be the best candidate.

Paragraph 5: Closing. You can write 'Yours sincerely' followed by your name.

When you finish, reread the letter twice, then rest for about 15 minutes and read it again. Check thoroughly for grammar and spelling mistakes and read it aloud to hear how it reads. Sometimes it works to send it to a friend or a family member to read it too. Perhaps they will see some unnoticed mistakes.
