What are the Seven Deadly Sins and their Meanings

The seven deadly sins are defined as a classification of vices mentioned by the education of Christianism. This education has the aim to morally teach the faithful. This group of the seven deadly sins appeared around the fourth century AD and it was used for Christian ethical education. It is the deadly sins which originate many other sins. First of all there's lust. This deadly sin is considered as a sin produced by having excessive sexual thoughts, as well as having uncontrolable sexual desires. This way, lust is considered a sexual addiction or a sexual compulsion. For the Church, being lustful implies undermining the sexual act, using it for other means which are not reproductive.

Gluttony is a deadly sin identified by ecxessive eating and drinking. Moreover, it also identifies any kind of ecxesses of any nature, which may be exercised irrationally and unnecessarily, such as drug or alcohol abuse.

Greed is also a deadly sin related to excess. On this occasion, it only refers to obtaining riches and material things. When someone is extremely greedy wishes to obtain riches in his own benefit above everything else.

Sloth is the deadly sin which creates sadness in our character. It is a negative attitude towards our obligations, especially the spiritual ones, such as pity and religious exercises. It is a reference of the inability of a person to accept his/her own existence.

Wrath is defined as an uncontrolled feeling of hate and anger. We could say that a person has committed the deadly sin of wrath when we adopt a vehement denial of the truth and when we have a desire of vengeance. Moreover, nowadays, wrath is also considered when a person is intolerable with others, may they be so for racial or religious reasons.

Envy is the sixth deadly sin and it makes people want things that other people already have. A person who is envious may be lead to feelings of harm to a fellow person.

Last of all is pride, one of the most important deadly sins and the most serious. This sin will give way to all the rest, according to the Church's moral education. It is characterized by desire and conviction of being more important and better than the rest, adopting extreme confidence which derives into vanity.
